Hyatt devaluation live, Chengdu $811, Nantucket $282
World of Hyatt's new 5-tier award pricing went live today — Day 1 analysis shows a 67% increase at top Category 8 properties on peak dates, but many mid-tier properties are flat or cheaper; check and rebook existing reservations now. New cash fares: American SFO → Nantucket $282 BE, Cathay Pacific SFO → Chengdu $811 RT (Mon–Thu, Aug–Sep), American SJC → Montego Bay $392 BE. Bonus urgency: Qatar Avios 50% buy bonus expires May 25, Chase UR → Flying Blue 20% expires May 27, Aeroplan 90% buy bonus expires May 31.

Three new cash fares posted overnight — American to Nantucket, Cathay Pacific to Chengdu, and American from SJC to Montego Bay. On the points side, the event everyone has been watching landed this morning: World of Hyatt's new 5-tier award pricing went live at 9 AM EDT. The early read is that it's less brutal than feared for flexible travelers, but peak-date bookings at top properties took a real hit. One immediately actionable wrinkle: if you have an existing Hyatt award reservation, check whether it's now cheaper to cancel and rebook.

New this window
American: SFO to Nantucket for $282 round trip
American Airlines posted an SFO → Nantucket (ACK) fare on May 19: $282 Basic Economy / $392 Regular Economy, taxes included, routing through Philadelphia. 1
Travel window is late June through July 2026, but availability is scattered — a few dates, not a broad sale. The Flight Deal flags that fares like this tend to disappear within two days of posting, so this one is worth checking today. Basic Economy: no advance seat selection, no changes, boards last, no miles earned on American. Regular Economy at $392 adds all of those back.
Book on google.com/flights or aa.com; use a flexible calendar to find which June and July dates still hold the sub-$300 pricing.
Cathay Pacific: SFO to Chengdu for $811 round trip
Cathay Pacific posted an SFO → Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) fare on May 19: $811 roundtrip including taxes, routing SFO–Hong Kong (HKG)–TFU in both directions, fare class Q. 2
Valid for Monday through Thursday departures and returns in late August and September 2026; availability is limited. A few details worth knowing: fare class Q earns zero miles on American AAdvantage but does earn miles on Alaska Mileage Plan (15,430 flown miles per itinerary, which computes to about 5.3 cents per mile — solid if you're building toward elite status). Stopovers at Hong Kong are permitted for $100 each, which could make a two-stop itinerary viable if you want to see HKG on the way. US citizens need a visa to enter China; processing time varies.
Book on cathaypacific.com or Google Flights. Fare class Q disappears quickly on flexible calendar searches — filter by Mon–Thu to find valid dates.
American: SJC to Montego Bay for $392 round trip
American Airlines posted an SJC → Montego Bay, Jamaica (MBJ) fare on May 17: $392 Basic Economy / $462 Regular Economy, routing through Dallas Fort Worth (DFW). 3
Travel windows are late August or late October 2026 — this is a mid-week sale, not broadly open. Availability is described as extremely limited; the 2-day freshness window has technically passed, but these deals occasionally survive a few extra days on American's system. Worth a quick Google Flights check. Basic Economy restrictions are standard American: no advance seat, no changes or cancellations, boards last. Regular Economy at $462 adds seat selection and carry-on. No US visa required for Jamaica.
Still active: fares from earlier this week
Copa SFO → Cartagena ($441 BE / $591 RE) — posted May 18, the TFD 2-day window expires today. 4 Still confirmed active on The Flight Deal's SFO category page as of this morning. Book on copaair.com if you want this — today is the last likely day.
Southwest SJC / OAK → Honolulu ($200 one-way) — still live for August 2026 departures. 5 OAK → Kahului (Maui) is also available from $199 OW. Southwest's Basic fare includes two free checked bags — a meaningful advantage over other carriers' Basic Economy products at similar prices. Must book at southwest.com; Southwest fares don't appear on OTAs (online travel agencies).
Alaska/Hawaiian SFO → Rarotonga ($691 round trip) — active for June through October 2026, and Google Flights shows fares as low as $643 through third-party sellers. 6 Beat of Hawaii published a pointed analysis on May 19 arguing this route is showing distress signals: peak-summer discounting, low seat loads, and limited US market awareness.
"This summer could become the last window before the Cook Islands slip back to being technically possible but practically out of reach." — Beat of Hawaii 6
The HNL → RAR nonstop runs once weekly on Saturdays. If you've had the Cook Islands on your list, this window — at these prices, with a route that may not survive into 2027 — is worth taking seriously.
Delta SFO → St. Thomas ($250 BE / $370 RE) and Delta/Air France SFO → Tahiti ($614 BE / $824 RE) and American SFO → Santiago ($615 BE / $795 RE) are all still showing on The Flight Deal's SFO category page. 7 These are 5, 7, and 8 days old respectively — past the typical 2-day freshness window, but leisure and international fares sometimes last longer. Check Google Flights before assuming they're gone.
Hyatt devaluation — Day 1 analysis
World of Hyatt's new award pricing structure went live this morning at 9 AM EDT. 8 The program replaced its 3-tier system (Off-Peak / Standard / Peak) with 5 tiers: Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper, and Top.

Image from Live and Let's Fly's award chart analysis — old 3-tier vs. new 5-tier pricing comparison
What changed at the top. Category 8 properties — the program's top tier — now range from 35,000 points per night at Lowest to 75,000 points per night at Top tier. The old peak ceiling was 45,000. That's a 67% increase on the worst dates at properties like Park Hyatt Tokyo during cherry blossom season or Grand Hyatt Kauai during peak summer. 9 Live and Let's Fly called it "a staggering increase in cost for top properties in the World of Hyatt portfolio."
What it looks like in practice. Cloud9Club did a same-day audit and found the picture is more mixed than the worst-case scenarios: 8
- Park Hyatt Tokyo, January 2027: most dates at 35,000–45,000 points (Lowest or Low tier) — cheaper than before for many January dates
- Park Hyatt New York, August 2026: dominated by Low tier at 45,000, with some Lowest (35,000) scattered through — also cheaper than before
- Park Hyatt Tokyo, April 2027 (cherry blossom): Top tier at 75,000 — up from 45,000 previously
- Grand Hyatt Kauai: most dates at 80,000 (a Category 9 property), with a few Low dates at 70,000
Cloud9Club's headline take: "A lot of dates at a lot of properties are the same or very close to before." 8 Reddit's r/hyatt community is, per the thread from earlier today, largely calm — one user (u/Skylarking77) wrote: "If this is how it's going to go, I'm not that mad. However, I think they're going to slowly raise things, or raise them 6 or 7 months down the line to avoid bad press." 10
The split in analyst reaction reflects a real split in traveler profiles. Flexible travelers who can move dates to avoid Top-tier windows should come out even or ahead. Travelers locked into school holidays, holiday weeks, or specific high-demand dates at a small number of trophy properties are absorbing real cost increases.
Properties that moved down. 24 of the 136 properties that changed categories moved to lower categories, which makes them cheaper. A few confirmed examples from the Day 1 data: 8
- Commune by the Great Wall (China)
- The Standard Singapore
- Hyatt Centric Downtown Denver
- Hyatt Centric Playa del Carmen
- Hyatt Place London City East
Free Night Award certificate changes. Category 1–4 free night certificates now cover nights up to 25,000 points (was 18,000). Category 1–7 certs now cover up to 55,000 points. The expansion looks positive, but note that several properties moved from Category 7 to Category 8 specifically — including Andaz 5th Avenue (New York), Hôtel du Louvre (Paris), and Hyatt Regency Aruba — putting them outside the cert range they were previously redeemable at. 9
The most actionable move right now: check your existing reservations. Hyatt does not automatically reprice existing award bookings when category tiers change. If a property moved to a lower-priced tier for your dates, you must manually cancel and rebook to capture the savings. Cloud9Club reported saving 12,000 points on a Grand Hyatt Barcelona stay by doing exactly this. 8 Log into hyatt.com, open your pending award reservations, and check the current pricing for each date before assuming your original booking was the best available rate.
Elite early access. Starting today, Explorist and Globalist members plus World of Hyatt cardholders get one month of early access to award inventory before standard members can see it. 8
Transfer bonus urgency stack
Seven credit card transfer bonuses are currently active. 11
| Program | Bonus ratio | Expires | Days left |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qatar Avios buy bonus (purchase only) | +50% on 21K+ Avios | May 25 | 5 days |
| Chase UR → Flying Blue (Air France/KLM) | 1,000 → 1,200 miles | May 27 | 7 days |
| Amex MR → Hilton Honors | 1:2.4 (vs. standard 1:2) | May 30–31 | ~10 days |
| Capital One → Qantas | +20% | May 31 | 11 days |
| Aeroplan buy-points bonus | +90% on 70K+ pts | May 31 | 11 days |
| Chase UR → Southwest Rapid Rewards | 1,000 → 1,300 pts | Jun 5 | 16 days |
| Chase UR → Marriott Bonvoy | 1,000 → 1,550 pts | Jun 30 | 41 days |
Qatar Avios: 5 days left
Qatar Airways Privilege Club is offering up to a 50% bonus on purchased Avios through May 25. 12 The best rate kicks in at the 26,000+ Avios tier: you pay roughly $598 USD for 26,000 base Avios and receive 13,000 bonus, totaling 39,000 Avios at approximately 1.53 US cents per mile.
For context: the August 2025 buy-bonus was 60% and December 2025 was 65%, so this month's offer is not the sharpest it's been. MainlyMiles describes it as "still a good deal" specifically for topping up toward known redemptions — Cathay Pacific intra-Asia business class (Singapore–Hong Kong, 22,000 Avios), Bangkok Airways Singapore–Koh Samui (6,000 Avios), or Qsuite to Europe (70,000–75,000 Avios). 12 If you don't have a specific redemption in view, skip it — speculative Avios buying rarely works out.
One logistics note: Avios can be transferred instantly and fee-free between British Airways Executive Club and Qatar Privilege Club (linked accounts required). BA now requires accounts to be 30 days old before linking; Qatar adopts the same rule starting June 2026.
Chase UR → Flying Blue: 7 days left
Chase Ultimate Rewards is offering a 20% transfer bonus to Air France/KLM Flying Blue through May 27. 13 The ratio: 1,000 UR → 1,200 Flying Blue miles. Flying Blue's May Promo Rewards (promotional monthly award pricing) includes SFO → Europe economy from 18,750 miles one-way — with the 20% bonus, that costs 15,625 UR points one-way, which The Points Guy calls "an absolute steal."
Flying Blue uses dynamic pricing, not a fixed award chart, so availability and pricing vary. Verify award seats on airfrance.com or klm.com before transferring points — transfers are one-way and irreversible. Flying Blue is part of the SkyTeam alliance, covering Delta, Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic, among others.
Note: a TPG article references a 25% bonus "through end of month" but Frequent Miler and Roame's aggregate tracker both confirm 20% through May 27. Use the 20% figure when planning. 11
Aeroplan buy-points: 11 days left, Aeroplan devaluation in 12
Air Canada Aeroplan is offering up to a 90% bonus on purchased points through May 31. 14 At the top tier (70,000+ base points), the effective rate is approximately 1.44 USD cents per Aeroplan point (1.97 CAD cents). For reference: 100,000 base points + 90,000 bonus = 190,000 Aeroplan points for CA$3,750 — enough to cover roughly four one-way Asia business class flights.
The urgency here is doubled: this is also the last buy window before Aeroplan's June 1 award chart devaluation, which raises SFO → Tokyo, Seoul, and Hong Kong business class by 13–17%. PointHacks confirms: "Aeroplan is increasing the price of many of these awards on 1 June 2026." 14
PointHacks also issues a firm caveat: only buy if you have a specific redemption lined up and have confirmed award availability. The February 2026 buy-bonus was 100%, so this month is a solid but not exceptional offer. Check award seat availability on seats.aero or aeroplan.com before committing.
Chase UR → Marriott Bonvoy: now fully confirmed at 55%
The Chase UR → Marriott Bonvoy 55% transfer bonus (May 16 – June 30) is now confirmed by Upgraded Points, Frequent Miler, and Roame — the uncertainty flagged in Issue #3 has resolved. 15 11
Confirmed, but Frequent Miler's verdict is blunt: "This will most likely still be a suboptimal redemption for most folks." At Frequent Miler's Reasonable Redemption Value of 0.77 cents per Marriott point, 1,000 UR converting to 1,550 Bonvoy is worth roughly 1.2 cents — below UR's own ~1.5 cents RRV. The math only approaches break-even if you're targeting cherry-picked high-value Bonvoy properties (top 25% averaging 0.91 cents per point). One niche use case: using Bonvoy as a bridge to airline miles. Every 60,000 Bonvoy points convert to 25,000 airline miles (with a 5,000 bonus) — useful for programs like Alaska, American, or JAL that don't partner directly with Chase. If you're topping up for a specific high-value redemption, this bonus makes it marginally less painful. Speculative transfers remain a bad idea.
Chase UR → Southwest: most actionable for Bay Area
The 30% transfer bonus to Southwest Rapid Rewards runs through June 5. 11 At 1,000 → 1,300 points, it's the most directly actionable bonus for Bay Area travelers — Southwest operates heavily from OAK and SJC to Hawaii, Mexico, and domestic destinations. 10,000 UR becomes 13,000 Rapid Rewards, which converts to roughly $160–$200 in Southwest redemption value depending on how you use it. The bonus does not count toward Companion Pass or A-List qualification.
Expired and closed
SAS SFO → Milan ($624) and SFO → Prague ($631) — both gone. Milan was posted May 18 and expired on day 2; Prague was posted May 11.
Delta One SFO → Hong Kong at 85,000 SkyMiles — the flash sale that ran May 15–18 is closed. No new bookings reported after May 18, and searches across Delta's site show normal pricing. 16
American SFO → Tampa / Raleigh-Durham / Pittsburgh ($236 Basic) — the trio of domestic deals posted May 16–17 is past the 2-day freshness window and likely expired.
